LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Truth can’t be masked forever

The Feb. 17 story “Museum’s Rembrandt knockoff turns out to be the real thing” perfectly illustrates how the artwork “Portrait of a Young Woman,” painted in 1632, had been hastily evaluated by so-called experts who deemed it painted by assistants of the renowned artist Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (commonly called Rembrandt).

Luckily, thanks to modern tools, such as X-rays, infrared technology, closer attention to brushstrokes and the findings of multiple layers of varnish, proved that the painting wasn’t an imitation.

This news item should teach all of us to not be too quick to judge a book by its cover — or a person, or a painting. Authenticity always shines through if we examine carefully and verify.

Many Americans are too busy heckling rather than seeking second opinions. God bless the museum; I hope many patrons will enjoy this painting once it goes on public display.
