LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Elected officials and self-interest

We’ve all read numerous thoughtful articles and heard political pundits and news commentators impute noble and righteous reasons to several senators in both parties to justify the conviction of President Donald Trump: principle, faith, conscience, country, party, accountability, etc. All are feel-good reasons. But this is politics, not philosophy.

Politics derives power from the people — voters, constituents. There are three rules in politics: First, get elected; second, get re-elected; third, don’t forget the first two.

If you don’t believe that these are the rules of politics, and politicians don’t follow them, then you also probably believe that Congress will pass term limits.
