Use Monorail to ease traffic snarl

Your Dec. 19 editorial advocating a Las Vegas Boulevard light rail system misses the obvious and less expensive option of extending the Monorail to McCarran International Airport via the Thomas & Mack Center.

During this year’s National Finals Rodeo, we saw the congestion around the Mack. Such a connection would reduce congestion at Tropicana Avenue and Paradise Road. It would also open the Mack to be a better part of the convention business. The rights-of-way for such an extension are far less congested than for light rail along the Strip.

Financing a Monorail extension is the drawback. The Regional Transportation Commission could build with a revenue-sharing agreement with the Monorail Company.

Terminal 1 at the airport is designed for a monorail station between the baggage and ticketing areas. It’s time to better use what we have before fighting through the lengthy design, permitting and construction of an expensive light rail system.
