LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Our democracy is in danger

President Donald Trump is understandably disappointed at the House vote to impeach him. However, he understands that he did nothing wrong and did not deserve this partisan action. Even if there was a quid pro quo in regards to withholding aid to Ukraine, the president rightfully used U.S. prestige and leverage and presidential leadership to force the corrupt Ukrainian government to clean up its mess.

We are at a critical moment in this country. A major political party has weaponized the justice system and the Constitution itself against its political rivals while sanctimoniously wrapping itself in the flag and quoting the Founding Fathers. This constitutes the gravest threat to our democracy since the Civil War.

What we are witnessing, as the founders and John Stuart Mill warned, is the “tyranny of the majority.” Let’s hope the Durham report is more than a “slap on the wrist.” Let’s hope these people are held accountable. Because if they are not, we will have lost our democracy, our system of justice of due process and fair play.
