LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

This should not be called a trial

I realize that the Constitution does not specify the procedures for an impeachment determination, but it is labeled a “trial.”

It boggles the mind to think that a trial would have the jury decide what evidence is to be presented, what discovery can be instituted and the time length of the proceeding.

What is the function of the judge in this trial? Normally those matters now being handled by the “jury” would be the job of the judge. There should be some other title to the impeachment process; maybe “political grandstanding by all sides” would be more apt.
