LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

It’s legislators’ time to step up

Nevada is one of four states that still hold biennial legislative sessions. The Legislature essentially meets for 120 calendar days once every two years. It is out of session until February 2021.

With the catastrophic impact the coronavirus has brought to Nevada, it is imperative that the Legislature call for a special session. It should work diligently to find a way to offer financial relief to those affected by mass layoffs at casinos and soften the financial hit small businesses will face in the wake of this disaster.

Frederick Douglass spoke of leadership when he said, “Man’s greatness consists in his ability to do and the proper application of his powers to things needed to be done.” This is an opportunity for the Legislature to be great, to be leaders, to apply their powers to the things that need to be done. The community is hurting, and this pain will only grow; it is up to our leaders to lead, and I eagerly await their response.
