LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Dark times are causing anxiety

It was easy to support a two-week shutdown or shelter-in-place when the concept was announced, because two-week interruptions for vacations, illness, accidents and injuries happen. Even when you’re living paycheck to paycheck, two weeks is survivable.

But when you don’t have a job for six weeks and you have no idea when paychecks will return, it’s no longer easy to manage.

We don’t have a state unemployment claim system that works, so there is no help from the state while we’re jobless. Many families have no money and no cars to wait in six-hour lines at food banks. Worst of all, we have no idea when this will end because the “four phases” have no start or end dates.

Like children, we are in the dark and fearing it.
