As America and the world grapple with the devastating impact of the coronavirus, we must resist the temptation to turn inward — and instead help our neighbors, whether they live across the street or across the ocean in the world’s poorest countries.
Diseases don’t respect borders. Defeating this global pandemic will ultimately take a global response. If the coronavirus outbreak has taught us anything, it’s that global health security is only as strong as its weakest link.
There is no simple solution to this complex problem. Defeating this pandemic and stopping the next one requires that global partners invest in stronger health systems, from well-equipped hospitals to new vaccines, treatments and practices.
Our elected leaders must look beyond our borders and focus not just on crisis response, but also crisis prevention.
This is all within our power, but only if we continue to invest in new and proven global health programs while ensuring they increasingly target the world’s most vulnerable.
