LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Senators need not fear Trump

Why back President Donald Trump’s lies about voter fraud? His position is baseless and the outcome of the election will not change. Continuing to support Trump makes people look foolish, unable to embrace the facts, and irresponsible — just like the president. It is a lost cause — Trump is now a one-term lame duck, and no amount of cajoling or denying the truth will earn him a second term.

President-elect Joe Biden has a history of bipartisan deal-making, so it’s time for Senate Republicans to get on board and stop supporting Trump’s divisiveness.

When I was a Republican, the GOP stood for something — states’ rights, a balanced budget, and a consistent and effective foreign policy. With the way senators are supporting Trump’s lost cause, they make it clear that they lack a backbone and stand for nothing except obstructionism and fantasy. Case in point: their willingness to crush the Affordable Care Act with no plan for replacement. Think about the 20 million people who depend on the Affordable Care Act. And think about the stupidity of not covering pre-existing conditions. Stop behaving so irresponsibly and childlike, and fix the ACA.

Get it together, lick your wounds, and work with Biden to build consensus for the good of the country. Embrace those long-lost Republican ideals by behaving more like Reagan Republicans, and stop fearing Trump.
