LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Be inspired by Lincoln’s words

The words of President Abraham Lincoln are so appropriate now.

In “The Life and Writings of Abraham Lincoln” by Philip Van Doren Stern, originally published in 1940, on page 232, you can find these words from Lincoln’s 1838 Lyceum Address:

At what point shall we expect the approach of danger?

By what means shall we fortify against it?

Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant, to step the ocean and crush us at the blow? Never!

All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined with all the treasures of the Earth … could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years …

If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of free men, we must live through all time, or die by suicide …
