LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Virus response hasn’t improved

President Donald Trump continues to make a mockery of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although aware of the seriousness back in February, he has refused to activate his full emergency powers in order to combat the virus, placing innocent American citizens in unnecessary peril.

Thus far, the death toll on his watch is over 217,000 and climbing every day. With total absence of empathy or emotion, his dismissive reaction: “It is what it is.”

When he was struck with the virus, people thought he would finally come to his senses and acknowledge that we need to wear masks, wash hands, etc. Instead, he flaunted his power by taking a joy ride from Walter Reed Medical Center (endangering Secret Service personnel) and returned to the White House (endangering the entire White House staff). In his photo op, who exactly was he saluting? The 200,000-plus dead souls haunting his psyche?

Trump had the best possible medical care and facilities available to him. Does he not think once about the many poor souls who died simply because they did not have access to proper medical care?

As Trump pretends to be immortal, the nation continues to suffer in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, manifested in violent social unrest, retail closures, small-business bankruptcies and stalemate in schools. No health, no civility, no economic vitality, and no education. This, my fellow Americans, is what Trump has done to our beloved country.
