Death penalty has no place here

This past summer, our eyes were unveiled to the unjust system of the policing across the country. Now think about how that same racist and corrupt bias can trickle into capital punishment.

This year is a chance for us to make some serious corrections to the law enforcement process, and the first step should be to get rid of the death penalty. This is an out-of-date system in which millions of taxpayers’ money is spent to choose life or death. This unfairly convicts lower-income individuals who cannot afford legal representation, and minorities who are singled out.

We already have enough suffering through this global pandemic. Getting rid of the death penalty will save our state money we can then use to help rebuild our economy and abort a tool that can be abused to kill with bias. As an African American woman and native Nevadan, I do not want to see what happened to George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arberry happen again, let alone here. Time to abolish the death penalty in Nevada.
