LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Safeguard one another’s safety

As our country is ravaged by COVID-19 variants, many people still underestimate the danger that this virus will infect, debilitate, maim and kill indiscriminately — regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or political affiliation. It has proven particularly deadly in that transmission can be caused by asymptomatic individuals. As a result, most infections are passed on innocently and with no ill intent.

Yet, despite the proven effectiveness of vaccinations, many refuse to get vaccinated. They have the freedom to do so, but they cannot and should not be allowed to carelessly and selfishly endanger the vast majority of their fellow citizens.

Those who choose not to get vaccinated should simply stay home and self-isolate. They should not be allowed to travel on commercial airlines, trains, buses, ferries, etc. They should not be admitted to public areas such as government offices, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, etc. Such students have the option for home-schooling or remote learning. Stores, theaters, casinos and other commercial establishments should reserve the right to refuse admission to the unvaccinated.

You are free to choose your own fate, but you cannot impose yourself onto others. Freedom is a privilege, not an entitlement to be abused.

So, let us first acknowledge that this is not a political issue, but a national public health crisis. Our health care system is reaching emergency levels once again. Before we can “Make America Great Again” or claim that “American is Back Again,” let us all agree to work together to “Make America Safe Again.”
