LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Senator makes mockery of oaths

I read with interest that Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who is an ophthalmologist, continues to rail against the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID-19 guidelines, including getting vaccinations and wearing masks, even though Paul acknowledges that he contracted the coronavirus.

Paul goes so far as to welcome incarceration in fighting the CDC’s COVID restrictions by confidently declaring that, “They can’t arrest all of us.”

This from a senator who swore an oath of office to protect the rule of law and from a physician who, when he practiced medicine, relied upon science and swore a Hippocratic oath to his patients. When translated, that oath means to treat the ill to the best of one’s ability and abstain from what is deleterious and mischievous.

With Paul being an ophthalmologist, I now understand the quote from an unknown author that “the eyes are useless when the mind is blind.” This also explains the exchanges between Paul and Dr. Anthony Fauci in committee hearings, in which Paul appeared clueless and Fauci tagged him as a liar.

Finally, for a man whose stated profession is medicine, Paul’s rallying call that he and like-minded people face incarceration will only prove the science of mortality rates for COVID-19 patients in small, congested areas (i.e. jail cubicles).
