LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Everyone must get vaccinated

It is nice to turn over the “Where I Stand” column periodically, and Aug. 8’s reminder, “Altruism offers a path out of the pandemic,” by Marc J. Kahn, dean of the UNLV School of Medicine, was appropriately written for getting vaccinated as soon as possible. However, as a senior with over 60 years of experience as a health care provider and as a Nevada resident since 1973, I consider myself obligated and credentialed to add my factual remarks.

Paying citizens to get vaccinated sends the wrong message and wastes money and resources. We have recognized the overwhelming priorities of sanitation, health and safety, and management of infectious diseases for over 150 years. Read “Deadliest Enemy,” by Dr. Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota, and/or go online to make use of the free resource called CIDRAP (Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy).

I can only wonder at the Pentagon’s waiting until now to mandate vaccination of all military and, I hope, federal workers in and out of the military.

People who refuse vaccination are a threat to all of us for spreading the disease and wasting medical resources. Mandates are a must.
