LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Gun safety effort can save lives

Clark County School District trustees are voting Thursday on a resolution regarding safe storage of firearms. This aims to educate families on the appropriate way to store firearms, as well as the legal obligations to protect our children from accessing unsecured firearms.

Firearms are the No. 2 cause of death among children and teens in Nevada and research suggests that 54% of gun owners don’t lock all of their guns securely. Supporting safe storage is imperative, since our children are home much more this year and have access to firearms more than ever.

The school district, in partnership with families, can save the lives of Nevada children by educating families on safe storage practices and keeping guns out of the hands of our children. I applaud the district on being proactive to protect our children from unnecessary gun violence, accidental shootings and suicide.
