Trump admits he lost — whoops

The Big Lie has officially been debunked — by the Big Liar himself.

Reacting to last week’s news that New York prosecutors had convened a special grand jury stemming from a criminal investigation into former President Donald Trump’s business dealings, Trump reacted with a statement calling the probe “an affront to the almost 75 million voters who supported me in the Presidential Election.”

Well, stop the presses: That number squares perfectly with the certified results from the 2020 election, which showed 74.2 million votes for Trump.

Oopsie, Mr. Ex-President, you just gutted your false narrative about the election by confirming that the ballot count was done correctly. So much for those millions upon millions of ballots that, according to you and your cult followers, were cast for you but were carted to the trash uncounted, were doctored by computer nerds in Venezuela, or whatever.

We’re sure this admission was purely unintended, and must have surprised Trump as much as everybody else. It was a moment of honesty, after all, which for Trump happens about as often as he gets sincere compliments on his skin tone.

But there it was, a big and bold acknowledgment that the election officials dutifully counted the 74 million-plus ballots cast by Trump voters. A grateful nation thanks you, Mr. Trump, for putting this issue to rest.

Not that most of us needed reassurance that the election was legit. We got that long ago from the election officials across the country, both Republican and Democrat, who confirmed the results. More confirmation came via the courts, which rejected the lawsuits challenging the results so fast they might as well have been written in crayon.

But still, we appreciate Trump’s confirmation that the vote wasn’t rigged, however accidental it was.

Now, you have to wonder what slip of the truth might come next from the former president. His inauguration crowd really was a fraction of President Barack Obama’s? He may have overdone it on the golfing while in office? He’s scared spitless about what this special grand jury might find?

The mind reels. But for now, it’s enough that he put his own Big Lie to rest.

Thanks again, Mr. Trump. We know it was a screw-up on your part, and you’re probably smacking your forehead for it, but America needed that.
