LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Protect people from fireworks

As private fireworks displays have escalated over the years, causing damage to homes and vehicles and placing a burden upon our public response and animal control agencies, isn’t it time our leaders took some action?

Illegal displays have caused fires, as was just demonstrated in North Las Vegas when a home fire resulted in three injured humans and 11 pets who lost their lives. The noise also terrifies pets, who often run away and end up getting hit by cars, or experience heart attacks brought on by fear.

In Ohio, adults and children have either been injured or killed by fireworks, and I’m sure this scenario has played out in every state that allows open sales. So why isn’t Nevada taking appropriate action to protect its citizens by leaving the displays to the professionals? As we’ve already seen time and again, expecting adults to behave responsibly doesn’t work.
