LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

GOP has lost its grip on reality

As a lifelong Republican, I am appalled that present-day Republicans are expected to believe the “Big Lie” that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Donald Trump. Conservative Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming was forced out of her leadership position in the House of Representatives because she refuses to genuflect to the former president and accept his version of events.

Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah was booed by members of his party at a delegation meeting because he voted his conscience in Trump’s impeachment trials.

Instead of supporting candidates and policies that are popular with voters, Republicans are pushing voter suppression laws in 47 states. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is putting the kibosh on democracy by putting 100% of his energy into opposing everything the Biden administration wants to do. It’s like putting a knee into the groin of the congressional legislators who are trying to enact laws to improve the lives of the American people.

The Republican Party has devolved into a cult of personality blindly following a leader whose favorability rating is 15 points upside down. He provoked a horde of his followers to violently attack the Capitol on Jan. 6 when Congress was in joint session to certify the electoral vote, because he just cannot believe that he lost the election.

What does it take to believe that Joe Biden is the duly elected president? Hopefully, more Republicans will speak out to alter the errant course of political hogwash before it ends in a political cataclysm.
