LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Abortion is deeply personal

It appears that the Christian right would prosecute God for miscarriages.

Texas politicians have decided that a heartbeat at six weeks is enough to halt an abortion. Unfortunately, their scientific knowledge is as good as their stand on COVID-19 vaccinations — the heartbeat is provided by the mother; the fetus’ heart is not developed, and does not get its own blood until late in the pregnancy. It happens just before the lungs become viable, a month before birth. Therefore, their six-week premise is without merit.

When Roe v. Wade became law, there were about 3 million abortions performed in the United States annually. Today, there are approximately 300,000. Thanks to Planned Parenthood, many women have taken advantage of scientific knowledge, eliminating the need for a termination.

For the unfortunate few who are faced with an unwanted pregnancy, terminating one doesn’t mean she can’t get pregnant some other time. Ending a pregnancy is a very difficult decision; it is extremely personal and should be respected as such.

If a woman does not want to carry a child to term, she will find a way to terminate the pregnancy. Before Roe v. Wade, thousands of women died in back allies trying to end unwanted pregnancies.

Roe v. Wade must be codified. The Constitution needs to protect the citizen under the law, not the unborn. If that flies in the face of your faith, then you shouldn’t do it; but don’t judge others.
