Letter to the editor:

Water solutions require work

I was happy to read Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto’s guest column (Combating drought and promoting sustainability in Southern Nevada, Aug. 15 in the Sun) and be reminded of the ways Nevada is leading in water conservation in the West.

It’s terrifying to read all the news about climate change effects, drought, wildfires and the uncertainty of it all. But it’s refreshing to hear that there are plans in effect to help bring along solutions to those issues and that we are doing so in collaboration with our neighbor states, like the Nevada-California water recycling project.

As a Southern Nevada resident, it’s reassuring to know we have a senator who is leading us into the future by making sure funding was included in the infrastructure bill for water conservation that directly affects our lives in the West. The water recycling project will aid the region by relieving some of the pressure in the Colorado River. At the more local level, Cortez Masto’s Southern Nevada Economic Development and Conservation Act will make funding available for more sustainability projects.

It takes all of us, our imaginations, smart policy and elected officials, like Senator Cortez Masto, who work for those solutions that matter. Southern Nevada has a great opportunity to help bring the West toward a water smart future, but it will take partnerships, collaboration and compromise.
