LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Lithium mining has its own rubs

One cannot help wonder why the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, in the interest of protecting our environment by promoting electric vehicles, issued mining permits in Northern Nevada to a Canadian company to mine lithium, a key ingredient in batteries. Doing so potentially causes more damage in many ways than we now face.

Mining lithium is a dirty process, and the conservation group Western Watersheds Project is taking the initiative to protect wildlife and water quality. Indigenous people in the area also object to local mining of lithium.

Besides the possible damage caused by the mining, housing must be provided for the workers and their families, requiring water, utilities and the like. It seems the BLM, by failing to address these needs, is merely substituting one problem with another.

With the Fed’s zeal to have us all driving unaffordable vehicles, an issue being avoided is the disposal of the exhausted batteries.

While our leaders freely use jet fuel without remorse, they are doing their best to keep us where they wish by controlling our fuel supply.
