Letter to the editor:

Be considerate of parking needs

I moved here in 2021, and what my family and I have found has been a great surprise.

Everyone we’ve met has been so friendly. But we also found a problem with handicapped-accessible parking. There are many such spots, but they are almost always taken.

My son has had to use crutches since he was 5. Because of his affliction he only has so much energy. Sometimes it takes him 20 minutes to walk a city block.

Sometimes, when someone parked in a handicapped space doesn’t appear handicapped, I ask where they got their placard. Some say nothing. One person said from their grandma and another said they bought it from an elderly person.

My son goes to a health club four times a week. He said he has never seen a person walk in on crutches, but the handicapped spots are almost always filled.

And it’s not just the health club. We see the same at Target, where my son gets his medication. And the grocery store, and many restaurants.

It’s rare for someone to check on handicapped parking or verify whether a placard belongs to the person using it. This means that in Las Vegas, there is virtually no handicapped parking for the disabled, if there is no enforcement.
