LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Placing integrity above politics

Liz Cheney was defeated soundly for her U.S. House seat in Wyoming. Her concession speech made clear the reason she had lost, and she repeated her strong conviction that her love for American democracy and its principles was much more important than her love of of office. Cheney said she would remain in the public eye, doing anything she could to see that Donald Trump never holds any further public office.

Cheney has no political base of any consequence, and her extreme conservative positions give her little political support from the Democrats. If she were to run for the presidency in 2024, it would have to be on an independent ticket as a spoiler to any chance of the GOP ascending to the presidency.

It is sad to see that Cheney is one of only a very small number of politicians to ever give up politics for the sake of personal integrity. I salute her for that and wish her well in the future.
