LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Term limits for Congress

U.S. presidents are restricted to two terms of four years each. Within the two-term limit, many presidents are effective. Examples include BarackObama for the Affordable Care Act and Lyndon Johnson for the Civil Rights Act. They did not need a longer tenure to pass worthwhile legislation.

Yet Congress is not subject to terms limits. Presently, our leaders in Congress are Nancy Pelosi, 82, with 35 years of service; Mitch McConnell, 80, with 37 years of service; and Chuck Schumer, 71, with 23 years of service. Despite nearly a century of combined service, these leaders do not seem to accomplish as much as some presidents.

I believe term limits should be imposed on Congress, with senators serving no more than three terms of six years and representatives serving no more than five terms of two years.

This would align with many governors, state legislatures and mayors who have term limits imposed on their office.

To expedite these changes, these questions should go directly to the American voters as a referendum, not decided by members of Congress, who have conflicts of interest.
