LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

CCSD can’t favor religions

Growing up in a Jewish community, where our schools closed on Jewish holidays because most teachers and students were Jewish, that gave our Christian friends extra days off from school throughout the year. The trade-off was a longer school year, which nobody objected to.

However, when I moved and found myself in a tiny minority among Christians, I never expected them to accommodate my holidays. Instead, I adapted as needed to keep with my faith.

The Clark County School District should not accommodate Jewish and Muslim holidays. There are no religious holidays that CCSD makes accommodations for, other than Christmas, which is also a national holiday. That pesky First Amendment always gets in the way.

To accommodate one religion, CCSD would have to accommodate all religions. Considering how many religions exist, including recently resurrected, long-gone Nordic religions that some military members are claiming, the number of academic days would be dwarfed by the number of holidays, all in the name of diversity. My advice to those who expect the larger society to cater to their beliefs: If you can’t adapt to the greater society, move back to a religious enclave where your faith is a majority.
