Fear and racism often connected

The writer of the Dec. 20 letter “Be cautious in dealing with cops” tells us that cops get scared, too, and that we therefore should be very careful around them, so as not to give them reason to use force.

I agree, except that I understand that a lot of racial bias and fear are intermixed. Racism arises out of fear of the other, the person not like you.

Those who understand this must also understand that the fear on the part of a police officer may be there already, no matter what anyone does to mitigate it.

If you do not believe this, simply look at how Black men have been portrayed in the news media of the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. Examine the politics behind the Willie Horton political ads. If you do that, you will see that for a Black man, it sometimes does not matter how he acts in a police situation.
