LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Thirsty valley needs water

We need water. The only way to get more is to pipe it in from other sources. Remember when President Dwight Eisenhower created the Interstate Highway System? His motivation was to move military personnel and equipment from coast to coast. Highway travel has since become dependent on that system.

My idea is to utilize the interstate system’s right-of-way to install a water pipeline from the flood waters of the East (or other areas with annual flooding problems), pipe those waters to nearby reservoirs, and from there, send those billions of gallons via a pipeline to connecting conduits (rivers or other pipelines), to a river that feeds Lake Mead.

This plan would not only restore the lake but provide water for the Southwest in general.

But instead of being serious about the drought, politicians want to tax us, cut back on water use and many other plans that do nothing to provide more water.

Are we going to wait until the white line at Lake Mead is 10 inches from the point at which intake straws no longer work? Will we not wake up until we have pulled up all living grass, lawns, trees and plants, thus turning the area back into a desert?

Rome succeeded because of an aqueduct system bringing water to the city. We need to utilize the same creative ideas here, and instead of aqueducts, use a pipeline. We have the technology, and imagine the jobs such a project would create.
