LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

NRA narratives strain credulity

The entire premise of the National Rifle Association, for decades — or since Wayne LaPierre took over — is that if we have enough guns in America, we will all be safer. It makes sense in a distant, uninformed sort of way.

We have been doing that for 30 years and the results are in: more killings. But the myth remains. Last month, we saw a good example of that scenario playing out in Uvalde, Texas.

There were numerous police officers in tactical gear, along with campus security. They all stayed back because it was too dangerous. From the start, a good guy with a gun could have stepped up. It didn’t happen.

But to perpetuate the theory that a good guy with a gun will save us, we sacrifice hundreds of lives. This myth is right up there with the narrative that we need a stronger mental health care system to fix America’s mass shooter problem. Ever hear those gun advocates push for money, training and deployment of this system they are going to create? But Americans love a nice narrative and story that allows them to do whatever they want, and the consequences are never their fault.
