LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Start by getting rid of some guns

There are only 13 countries in the world where there are more than 10 million guns in civilian hands. The United States ranks, of course, No. 1 by an enormous margin. The two countries with the next-greatest number of guns average fewer than 10 guns per 100 citizens. Here, we average over 120 guns per 100 citizens.

All of the laws being proposed since the latest slaughters would make it harder for people to purchase guns in the future. While this might be a good idea, it seems to me that in a country that already has almost 400 million guns in private hands, maybe laws that make it harder to buy guns tomorrow won’t do much to stop the killings today.

Guns are already everywhere. Sadly, most of these 400 million guns are not in the hands of a well-regulated militia. When was the last time a well-regulated militia walked into a school and killed some students? The Second Amendment needs to be modified.
