LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Don’t block access to nature

Drivers heading west on Summerlin Parkway or Lake Mead Boulevard have long been treated to the sight of a cluster of red sandstone features nestled at the base of the La Madre Mountains.

Known informally as “Little Red Rock,” the area features interesting slot canyons among the red boulders. But now, drivers will also notice the growth of earthen mounds where new construction sites are going up in front of the area. Any attempt to drive to the area quickly runs into blockages that likely will follow the pattern of other housing sites in the area.

In these places, east access to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is blocked by walled and gated communities. Residents who love being able to visit Little Red Rock and hike its trails need to maintain a vigilant eye on development and make sure we continue to have access to our own natural areas.
