Making Avi Kwa Ame (the Mojave name for Spirit Mountain) a national monument would preserve a sacred and culturally significant area to local Native American communities and offer protection from threats due to development.
The area contains critical habitats and migration corridors for protected species such as the desert tortoise and golden eagle. It also helps protect wild terrains that permit species to adjust and persevere in the midst of the tensions of environmental change.
I thank Reps. Susie Lee and Dina Titus of Nevada for their support for the proposed national monument and urge the Biden administration to use the Antiquities Act to establish protection for Avi Kwa Ame, making it a national monument.
