LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Just listen to the voters

At a recent meeting of the Democratic National Committee, President Joe Biden told the members they have a record “to be proud of,” and they must sell it with “confidence, clarity, conviction and repetition” heading into the midterm elections. He predicted that if Republicans regain control of Congress, it will be a “sad, sad two years.”

Whether the record of Democrats is something to be proud of is a matter of individual opinion in the minds of the voters. Amidst much Democratic Party insider hand-wringing, brought on by widespread rejection of policies and personnel, the sloganeers are casting about for a new, hopefully more successful catchphrase. After all, “Build Back Better” seems like a bust.

Biden and other Democrats don’t understand that people do not necessarily vote on a party’s record. People vote on what is at the top of their minds at the moment. For better or worse, the Republican Party masters this concept while it appears completely lost on Democrats.

We have serious crises with which to contend, both foreign and domestic. Biden must act more forcefully, and stop dithering and leading from behind. Has he no vision?

As for the other Democratic pooh-bahs: The record means nothing. They should put their ears to the ground and listen to what Americans are saying. They should respond and address those concerns forcefully. If so, maybe they will win. If they ignore the people, they deserve to lose.
