LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Don’t leave pets alone in cars

Every year, dogs suffer and die when careless people leave them in a parked car while they run an errand.

On a 78-degree day, the temperature in a car can reach 140 degrees in a short time. Imagine how hot inside it would be on a 90-degree day.

Leaving windows open a crack doesn’t eliminate the danger of heat stroke or death. The heat is extra tough for dogs because they can only cool themselves by panting or sweating through their paw pads.

If you come across a dog or anything alive stuck in a hot car, call 911 or Animal Control to report it.

And pet owners: Be responsible and leave your animals at home where they are safe. Nothing with a heartbeat should be left in any vehicle. Good intentions are not enough.
