LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Winter is Russia’s weapon

The Nov. 17 Sun editorial, “Putin’s cruelty has crossed a line that demands strong international response,” had it right.

Vladimir Putin has been reading Russian history. By attacking the electrical infrastructure in Ukraine, he is setting up a situation similar to the one Alexander the Great had when Napoleon fought his way from France to Moscow, and stayed from Sept. 14, 1812, to Oct. 18 of that year.

Alexander had ordered his people to leave Moscow and a puzzled Napoleon, who found an empty Moscow and waited about a month expecting Alexander to return and negotiate the end of the war.

He never did, and when Napoleon finally ordered his troops back to France, winter had set in, and many of them froze to death on the way back, giving Russia the win.

With Ukraine’s power pounded into disarray by Russian missiles, many Ukrainians will freeze to death this winter if something is not done to help.

Even if you don’t think history repeats itself, you have got to admit that it certainly rhymes.
