LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Our democracy is on life support

Disenfranchised people and their sympathizers have initiated many uprisings and movements to correct the injustice of unequal rights in America. When it was written, the Constitution afforded more rights to white men than to anyone else, including the right to vote.

Those uprisings and movements exposed contradictions in our democracy and their unjust consequences — relegating some Americans to second-class citizenship — but those protesting activists sought fair and just relief.

As a result, our Constitution has been amended several times to strengthen the availability of democratic principles for all Americans. However, even today, the primacy of democratic principles appears to be on life support. The vital activities of those who expose inequalities and provide the impetus to eliminate them and the primacy of these principles suffer when attacks are leveled against voting rights, abortion rights, immigration and gender rights. Moreover, some rich and powerful people seem to reject the application of these principles for other Americans as they selfishly grab for more power and control over others.

Those power grabbers and their followers suggest that they support applying democratic principles to all Americans, but how can this be true when their negative and harmful actions reflect discrimination and hatred for others?

In order to eliminate the suffering and take our democracy off of life support, it is time for to support authentically the primacy of our democratic principles for all Americans.

Otherwise, they should not be trusted and supported to ensure the survival of our democracy with no interference from them.
