Election deniers threaten nation

A FiveThirtyEight report confirms President Joe Biden’s contention that the political far right is an existential threat to our democracy. This report noted that 60% of Americans will have at least one election denier on the ballot this fall. Of the 541 Republican candidates reviewed, 37% fully rejected that the 2020 presidential election was valid and only 13% fully accepted the election results. All others reluctantly accepted that Biden was elected president.

No Nevada Republican candidates fully accepted the 2020 presidential election results. Reluctantly accepting the election and the office sought are: Joe Lombardo, governor; Sigal Chattah, attorney general; Mark Robertson, 1st Congressional District; and Mark Amodei, 3rd Congressional District. Fully denying a valid 2020 presidential election are: Jim Marchant, secretary of state; Adam Laxalt, Senate, April Becker, 2nd Congressional District; and Sam Peters, 4th Congressional District.

The Jan. 6 insurrection and the many schemes of politicians and others showed the extent to which election deniers would go to prevent a peaceful transfer of power. Fortunately for our democracy, these failed. Today, Republican election deniers who have little respect for our Constitution, laws or judicial system are running for major political offices. Should these Republicans and their kind gain control of our states and country, American democracy is doomed.
