One of my first letters published by the Sun concerned police accountability. I posited that technology could help — specifically, smart guns and smart cameras.
Smart guns that could only be fired by officers would increase officer safety. Their use would also eliminate “reaching for my gun” as a justification for using lethal force.
Gun cameras provide that clear view, from the gun to the target, at the moment of the use of lethal force.
Both technologies exist or were once available. With renewed calls for accountability, these two things can and should be used to effect a real change in police culture.
