OPINION:

Strengthen the social safety net

Newly elected House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has mentioned cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. But he should be looking for ways to shore up those programs instead of cutting them.

Social Security is owed more than $2.7 trillion after it was raided to pay for tax cuts for the rich and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan under former Republican President George W. Bush.

The GOP should pay what is owed before cutting benefits to more than 80 million Americans who paid into Social Security their whole working lives.
