LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Debt limit is a hostage crisis

When I get our credit card bill, I don’t refuse to let my family eat until they promise to never charge on the card again. That would be holding my family hostage for negotiations that should happen when we spend the money, not when the bills come due. In my case, it is a family decision and in Congress’ case, it is their job to pay the bills when they come due.

When Congress is working on the budget, that is when you discuss spending, not when the bill comes due. The GOP is holding our country’s and world’s economic health hostage, and for what?

Just listen to what Republicans have said publicly. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Speaker Kevin McCarthy want cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. This is the holy grail of the GOP. They know Americans don’t want that. They know their idea is unpopular.

Most Americans think this is about spending too much money, but it isn’t. It is about Congress doing its constitutional duty to maintain the full faith and credit of the United States. It is their job to do that.

If the GOP wants to attack Social Security and Medicare, then go ahead. Run for office next term on that agenda. Be the party of principle and tell the American people what your vision is for this country.
