The last day of March may not mean much to most people — just another day on the calendar, maybe a day before the countdown to summer begins. But for candidates running for federal office — from Congress to the U.S. Senate to the presidency — it’s a day for one thing: begging. And they were all doing it Monday — begging donors, large and small, to give on the last day before the reporting period ends so they can puff out their chests and say how well they have done. They did it by phone, by e-mail, through surrogates. They held out their tin cups so they could show who had the fullest one by midnight. So what does that mean today is for? One thing, again: spinning how the begging was a rousing success.
