LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Purchasing applause not worthy of praise

Regarding Lee S. Gliddon Jr.’s letter on Sunday headlined “Give Bush credit where credit is due”:

The writer seems to feel we should all be congratulating President Bush for the great job he did at the NATO summit. What Bush did was simply a case of buying friends.

The “strong support” he received was due to the fact that the United States will now be paying for the missile defense for the eastern and middle European NATO countries. He bought their support for this, while the European Union continues to bash Bush for not signing the Kyoto Protocol.

But Gliddon’s “dime to a doughnut” bet is worth less than 2 cents, because 81 percent of the people in this country feel the United States is on the wrong track. And this is after Bush’s attempt to buy us with the billions in the economic stimulus package.

The aforementioned 81 percent can’t all be liberals. And, yes, I am united — united with those 81 percent.
