So there was this spirited discussion of Nevada’s fiscal future this week titled, “Is Nevada’s Tax Structure Outmoded?” And it took place a long way from Las Vegas. The Northern Nevada Network, a Reno business group, hosted the forum that included presentations by special interests and elected officials. Everything was discussed from taking money for Yucca Mountain to criticizing a revival of the gross receipts tax to picking part the teachers’ gaming tax proposal. Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio cogently said that while the governor’s idea for a waste-finding commission is fine, the real need is to find a tax structure that can meet Nevada’s modern needs. About time we had a forum like that down here.
