LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Campaign system is costly and inefficient

The present political campaigns, now going into the second year, have generated a lot of spending on the media, consultants, experts and manufacturers of campaign buttons. However, these expenditures are wasteful and the campaigning is an example of false premises.

If, instead of local primaries and caucuses, there was a national primary, say in May of each presidential election year, not only would that save a lot of money (which could be spent on domestic problems), but it also would require the candidates to state a national program, not one tailored to each state immediately prior to that state’s primary or caucus.

That would give the nominee about six months to “spread his or her word” to the general electorate or to specific audiences, as the campaign determines. OK, I’ll be a realist. This will never happen.
