LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

More Social Security taxes would be theft

This is in response to Steve Rosin’s Saturday letter to the editor headlined “How the wealthy can save Social Security”:

Mr. Rosin suggests that we remove the current $97,500 limit on income that is subject to social security tax so that every dollar earned is subject to the 6.2 percent tax on earnings (the 1.45 percent Medicare tax is not subject to the limit).

The only way that would accomplish anything is to keep the retirement benefit level the same for anyone who was over the income limit during their working years. So in order to fix the Social Security shortfall, he would have the “wealthy” pay more into the system but receive nothing in return.

My income is in excess of the limit because of extremely hard work. I have never inherited money or been given a dime — it is all from regular earnings from two difficult jobs and I am certainly not “wealthy” by any definition of the word. Mr. Rosin’s suggestion amounts to nothing more than stealing thousands of extra dollars from my pocket to put into his.
