Maybe it’s not her fault. Maybe it’s too early for omens. And maybe she was nervous. But Allison Copening, the Democrats’ great hope to erase state Sen. Bob Beers, didn’t come off too well in a piece last week penned by David McGrath Schwartz and J. Patrick Coolican. If there’s one, overarching pet peeve I have after covering politics for two decades-plus, it is this: candidates who announce without studying the issues. That’s how Copening, who announced a few weeks back and had her official kickoff this weekend, came across. No, she can’t possibly have as much knowledge as the incumbent. But some would be nice. Platitudinous nonsense won’t get you far with the media. Then again, it just might get you elected at any level.
