LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Race should play no part in voting

I am saddened and dismayed to learn that the percentage of white voters who cast their primary ballots nationwide for Barack Obama is proportionately low, suggesting a racial bias.

Sen. Obama deserves better. He is a well-educated, young, able, dedicated and well-qualified candidate who merits careful consideration to become president of the United States based on these qualities rather than be rejected for reason of race.

It was reported that more than one in 10 whites in Pennsylvania this week said that race was a factor in how they voted, and they broke for Clinton by a margin of 3-to-1. This is unconscionable and not in the best interest of our country.

Nevertheless, it appears probable that Sen. Obama will be selected by the Democratic Party as its candidate for president. In that case, I appeal to my fellow white voters to give him fair and equal consideration in casting your ballots in November.
