LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

California quake should wake us up

The recent earthquake that startled Southern California and was felt here in Nevada should be a wake-up call for all of us. According to ABC News, Japan already has an “alert warning system” in place that provides its citizens 15 to 30 seconds to seek cover.

Our government refused to create this system, stating it would be too costly. Isn’t it strange that we go to all costs to fight wars and have no financial resources to save our people from harm?

This is another reason to reject Yucca Mountain. An earthquake in that area with its tons of nuclear waste should give everyone in the southern part of Nevada great concern, since we do sit on a fault. The thought of such an event is frightening.
