Here is a simple suggestion to end the high school dropout problem:
What would happen if the hospitality, casino and construction industries required a high school diploma or GED to obtain employment? It is often stated that a high school diploma is not required to earn a comfortable living. A person may not need a high school diploma to park cars, be a dealer, or be a construction laborer. However, what is not said is that the lack of a high school diploma eliminates most opportunities to advance in these industries and perhaps other pursuits.
K-12 education exists to provide students the basic knowledge required to make informed lifetime choices.
Requiring a high school diploma would not require an economic investment by these industries, nor would it require any additional government revenue. Requiring a high school diploma (or GED) would improve the readiness of individuals to enter the job market and perhaps enable a brighter future.
