LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

U.S. broke Iraq, so U.S. should pay for it

Regarding Lisa Mascaro’s story in Sunday’s Las Vegas Sun regarding paying for Iraq’s reconstruction, it has been reported that Iraq could have a cumulative budget surplus of $79 billion by the end of the year; nevertheless, it has spent just 1 percent from 2005 to 2007 for infrastructure projects. In comparison, U.S. taxpayers have spent $48 billion on Iraq reconstruction so far.

However, lest we conveniently forget, it was the United States that created this mass destruction (familiar term) by destroying Iraq’s infrastructure during a war that was undertaken based on unsubstantiated charges that proved to be entirely false. So, who is to blame and therefore responsible to pay for the cost of reconstruction?
